Vote to approve and present a Proclamation declaring April 22-28 as Earth Week in Chatham County
Abstract
Introduction & Background: Earth Day has been celebrated every year on April 22 since 1970. Earth Day is meant to raise public awareness of the impact that both individuals and government policies can have on the environment. The Climate Change Advisory Committee (CCAC) recommends the Board of Commissioners acknowledge Earth Day and its meaning with this proclamation.
Discussion & Analysis: The idea for the proclamation came from the CCAC as a way to raise awareness of the threat posed by climate change to the natural environment of Chatham County. The CCAC staff liaison took this idea to the Conservation Working Group to solicit input on the proclamation. The Conservation Working Group, comprised of representatives of 14 different County departments, provided content which highlighted the good work the County is doing year-round to protect and conserve Chatham County’s abundant natural resources. The proclamation recognizes the work is ongoing and is not contained within any one department.
This proclamation encourages residents to think about the impacts of their daily decisions on the natural environment and climate. It also reinforces the County’s commitment to conservation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This proclamation reinforces several sections of the Comprehensive Plan, including the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Resilience Plan Elements.
