Abstract

Action Requested: Vote on a request to approve $25,000 Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Runner-Up Prize Award.

Introduction & Background: The Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge was launched in 2016 by the Aetna Foundation, along with the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the National Association of Counties (NACo), to help empower 50 small-to-midsize cities and counties to implement innovative solutions for their local public health issues.  Chatham is one of 10 communities receiving recognition through the Challenge with the Runner-Up Prize Award, and will receive $25,000.

Discussion & Analysis: Eight runners up were selected for their work to improve opportunities to achieve optimal health for community members, regardless of income, education or ethnic background.  Specifically, Chatham County was recognized for our collaborative efforts to promote and foster health through the Chatham County Comprehensive Plan and the longitudinal approach to the Community Assessment.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This funding recognized the innovative approach to the comprehensive plan, specifically the health element, as well as the Community Assessment.

Budgetary Impact: The funds will be used to advance the community assessment and implement strategies in the Comprehensive Plan.

Recommendation: Vote on a request to approve $25,000 Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Runner-Up Prize Award.
