Title

Vote on a request to approve a fine-free day during National Library Week in April.

Abstract

Action Requested: Vote on a request to approve a fine-free day during National Library Week in April.

Introduction & Background: The purpose of charging fines is to incentivize borrowers to return materials so that they can be circulated to other library users. Sometimes the fines have the opposite effect and cause individuals to avoid using the library.

Discussion & Analysis:

The library has had other fine-forgiveness days in the past. The borrowers were appreciative of the opportunity to return materials without having to pay a fine because they were forgetful in bringing things back to the library in a timely manner. The request is only for fines and does not include replacement costs for the loss of library materials.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: N/A

Budgetary Impact: Waiving fines for one day would potentially be the loss of no more than $600.

Recommendation: Motion to approve a fine -free day at the library to promote regular use of the library.
