Vote on a request to adopt a Resolution Proclaiming September 2017 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Chatham County.

 

Abstract

Action Requested: 

Vote on a resolution proclaiming September 2017 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Chatham County.

                     

Introduction & Background:  The national celebration of Hispanic and Latino heritage began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson. It later was enacted as a federal law on August 17, 1988. It calls upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this time with ceremonies, activities, and programs.

 

This observance celebrates the culture and traditions of people whose ancestry can be traced to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean islands.

 

The 2016 U.S. Census estimates that almost 12 percent of Chatham County’s population.  As part of this celebration, the Hispanic Liaison is joining with Siler City and other sponsors in hosting the 2017 Hispanic Heritage Fiesta in Siler City on September 16, 2017, a family friendly event with activities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
