Title

Recognize Sam Groce upon His Retirement from Cooperative Extension

Abstract

Action Requested:  Make the presentation to Sam Groce

Introduction & Background:  Sam Groce, who currently is director of the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, is retiring on August 31, 2017. He has served as director of extension since July, 2010.

Sam, who has a cattle farm in western Chatham, joined extension in 1993 as an associate agent in Chatham County. At that time, he served as a county agricultural agent, providing educational programs on livestock and forages as well as farm business management, field crops, aquaculture and pesticide education. In 2010, he received the Distinguished Service Award from both the state and national associations of County Agriculture Agents.  He helped initiate the Voluntary Ag Districts program.

As county director, Sam played a key role in planning for the new Agriculture & Conference Center that opened earlier this year. The facility offers space for public events and also houses offices for Cooperative Extension, Soil & Water Conservation and other ag-related agencies.

The Board of Commissioners will recognize his career at the meeting with a special presentation.
