Title
Vote to accept $2,500 in Suicide Prevention Funds from the UNC Suicide Prevention Institute
Abstract
Introduction & Background: UNC Suicide Prevention Institute awarded grant funding to Chatham County Public Health Department for the purpose of supporting the Suicide Prevention team’s efforts to improve mental health and reduce suicide in Chatham County.
Discussion & Analysis: The goal of this funding is to support the purchase of and distribution of gun locks. Gun locks are an Evidence-Based Intervention to prevent accidental death or death by suicide. The purchase and distribution of gun locks in Chatham County are a key access step in the Strategic Plan of the newly formed Suicide Prevention Coalition at the Health Department. The overall goal of the coalition is that the Chatham County community has access to mental health services and the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to suicide. The third strategy of this plan is to decrease access to lethal means, and this grant project supports it.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Becoming more resilient by mitigating, responding, and adapting to emerging threats. Quality education, housing, and community options for all. Foster a healthy community.
Budgetary Impact: No Local Funding Requested.
Recommendation: Motion to accept $2,500 in Suicide Prevention Funds from the UNC Suicide Prevention Institute.
