Title

Public hearing to receive public comment on the preferred alternative option for redefining Commissioner Districts and vote to adopt the Resolution Pursuant to Section 22.1 of Chapter 153A of the General Statutes of North Carolina Redefining Commissioner Districts.

Abstract

Introduction & Background:

At its August 21, 2023, regular meeting, the Board of Commissioners received public input on the proposed alternatives for redrawing the Board of Commissioners’ residency district boundaries.  Following the public input period, the Board of Commissioners identified Option 1 as the preferred alternative to bring forward for a public hearing and consideration of adoption.  Accordingly, the Board set a public hearing for its next regular meeting on the evening of September 18, 2023.

Following the public hearing and discussion on the preferred alternative, the Board may adopt the proposed resolution that will enact the newly redefined residency districts for the upcoming, and future, primary and general elections for the Chatham County Board of Commissioner seats.

Discussion & Analysis:

The redistricting alternative subject to this public hearing meets the statutory test for compliance, as the adoption of this alternative will result in the “reduction in the relative overall range of deviation” between the five commissioner residency districts.  In addition to meeting this legal requirement, and relative to the existing district boundaries, the proposed redistricting alternative upholds the criteria set by the Board of Commissioners for the redrawing of its residency districts.
