Present the Special Team Effort Award to the Parks & Recreation Department
Abstract
Action Requested: Recognize the Chatham County Parks & Recreation Department for its team effort during an extraordinarily busy period this fall. The staff went beyond the call of duty to accommodate unexpected demands.
Introduction & Background: As the 2016 General Election approached, Chatham County had a very difficult time locating a site for the Board of Elections early voting in northeastern Chatham. More than a dozen different sites were investigated, but all fell through. With little time left, the County Manager’s Office decided that the only viable option was to place a modular unit at the Park at Briar Chapel for early voting. While not ideal, it was simply the last remaining option. This choice placed significant burdens on the county’s recreation staff in terms of rescheduling events, notifying athletic teams and groups of changes, dealing with heavy traffic and congested parking areas, handling extra cleanup of the grounds and getting an earful from those folks who were inconvenienced by changes in plans.
A the same time, the Town of Siler City asked the department to again step in to serve as interim director of its recreation programs, due to a departmental vacancy. The county department did not hesitate to help out in this situation, even though it meant even more overtime work and travel to and from Siler City.
The Board of Commissioners would like to honor the county Parks & Recreation Department for rising to the occasion during several challenging weeks. The board will present the department with a Special Team Effort Award for the long hours and many difficulties encountered during this period.
