Vote to approve Great Trails State Grant application for the Haw River State Trail Pegg Tract Improvements
Abstract
Introduction & Background: This project is the first major effort in the county to advance development of the Haw River State Trail since the completion of the feasibility study last fall. The focus of this project is the Pegg tract State Natural Area and 15/501 river access parking lot.
Discussion & Analysis:
Components of the project include:
- Construction of 6' wide steps and standing pad into the river at the current paddle launch location and construction of a concrete 206 linear ft boardwalk along the access trail to the launch site.
- Construction of approximately 6,225 linear feet of new natural surface trail outside of the flood plain, including a 45 ft bridge over Miles Branch creek and trail signage.
- Installation of a Greenflush restroom and new trail head kiosk at the 15/501 parking lot.
This project is a combination of 2 CIP projects that were submitted in FY24 along with some new components.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This project relates to the County’s comprehensive plan objectives by providing recreational opportunities and access to open space, and by providing infrastructure to support desired development and support economic and environmental objectives.
Budgetary Impact: Total project budget is $630,730. Match requirement is 1:1 or 50%. Grant request is for $315,365 with a match commitment of the same amount.
