Discussion & Analysis: N/A

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Cooperating with NCDOT on road maintenance abandonment requests directly supports the implementation of the Chatham County Comprehensive Plan by aligning transportation infrastructure decisions with long-term land use and development goals. The Comprehensive Plan emphasizes coordinated planning to promote safe, efficient transportation systems while preserving the county’s rural character. When NCDOT proposes to abandon maintenance of certain roads, Chatham County reviews these requests to ensure they are consistent with the county’s vision for growth, connectivity, and resource allocation. These decisions can influence future land use, access, and infrastructure investment, making local coordination essential. Although the county does not maintain roads itself, its Planning Department plays a key role in evaluating these requests, engaging the public, and supporting resolutions that reflect community priorities and the goals outlined in both the Comprehensive Plan.
