Introduction & Background: The Chatham County Commissioners adopted an ordinance on July 16, 1984 for establishing the names of roads in Chatham County, a procedure for future naming or renaming of public and private roads located in Chatham County. In early 2005, the Office of Emergency Operations received notice that AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) was proposing the by-pass around Pittsboro be US 64 and that the existing portion become US 64 Business . A letter was written to the State Department of Transportation asking the name of that portion be US 64 Bypass and US 64 remain as it was to keep citizens and businesses from having to change their addresses. We were advised a letter was sent denying our request but we are unable to locate that letter. We have been in contact with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on numerous occasions trying to resolve this issue and our findings are the documents attached. The documents state the current US 64 through the municipality of Pittsboro is now US 64 Business. This documentation was received on November 28, 2016 from Joe Hummer, Staff Engineer, Mobility and Safety Division of NC DOT.
Discussion and Analysis: As part of its plan to develop the Enhanced-911 Emergency Response System, there is a vital need to maintain the County's established system providing for the naming or renaming of public roads. This is important so that there can be no duplications or similarities of these assigned names within Chatham County.
