Title

Vote on a request to approve $34,144.48 in revenue from the federal SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) ARPA fund to be used as additional support for administration of the Chatham County Food and Nutrition Program.

Abstract

Action Requested: Vote on a request to approve $34,144.48 of Food and Nutrition Services funds to assist with administering the SNAP program.

Introduction & Background: At the end of Federal Fiscal Year 2022 (September 30, 2022), NC DHHS received an additional $15,443,247.61 in ARPA funding to assist State agencies in carrying out legislative provisions and administering the SNAP program.  Chatham County’s portion of that, based on the number of recipients, was an additional $34,144.48.  Among other things, USDA recommended using this unique opportunity to invest in technology to improve client access to SNAP and to make investments in employees to improve customer service.

Discussion & Analysis: If approved by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, Chatham County DSS plans to hire additional temporary staff and is evaluating the use of a self-service kiosk in the waiting area that would shorten wait time and assist in checking in clients.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: N/A
