Abstract

Action Requested: Vote on a request to adopt a Resolution Proclaiming September 2018 as World Rabies Awareness Month

                     

Introduction & Background: Rabies kills more than 59,000 people throughout the world, nearly 1 death every 9 minutes.  As estimated 40,000 in the U.S. receive a series of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) shots after contact with a possibly rabid animal.

The U.S. public health cost associated with rabies is estimated to be as high as $500 million annually.

                     

Discussion & Analysis: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Chatham County Veterinarians and Animal Services Division of the Chatham County Public Health Department have joined together to advocate the importance of rabies vaccination in pets and the proper post-exposure treatment.
