Vote to adopt a resolution recognizing May 2026 as Foster Care Awareness month

 

Abstract

Introduction & Background: The Chatham County Board of Commissioners has regularly passed resolutions in May recognizing Foster Care Awareness month, coinciding with the national recognition

                     

Discussion & Analysis: Staff and community partners work together to promote awareness of children in foster care and the families that support them.

 

Research has shown that children growing up in foster care, even under the best circumstances, may experience problems related to the child maltreatment they experienced, resulting in higher expenses for healthcare and lost productivity. Coordinated prevention-based efforts support families to safely parent their children and reduce the need for foster care.

 

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This relates directly to the Comprehensive Plan goal to “Foster a Healthy Community.”
