Title
Vote to approve and present a Resolution Honoring George Moses Horton Day on June 28, 2025 in Chatham County
Abstract
Introduction & Background: George Moses Horton, born into slavery in Chatham County around 1798, overcame extraordinary odds to become the first African American in the South to publish a book. Self-taught and inspired, Horton’s poetic voice emerged during a time when enslaved people were denied literacy and freedom of expression. His first collection, The Hope of Liberty (1829), boldly called for emancipation and remains a powerful testament to the human spirit.
Despite the limitations of slavery, Horton gained literary recognition during his lifetime, writing poetry for students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and continuing to publish collections even as he sought and ultimately secured his freedom.
His life and work are a source of pride for Chatham County and represent the resilience, intelligence, and creativity that define our shared history.
