Title

Vote to approve a contract with Strategic Materials to process glass bottles and jars for recycling collected by Solid Waste & Recycling

Abstract

Introduction & Background: Glass bottles and jars are collected at the 12 Collection Centers and Main Facility for recycling. Glass is brought to a collection point at the Main Facility, and a contractor hauls it to Strategic Materials in Wilson, NC. Strategic Materials removes contamination, separates the glass by color, and creates cullet to be used in making new materials.

Discussion & Analysis: Strategic Materials is the only viable option for glass processing. Since glass is separated at the Collection Centers, Chatham has a great product, so we are paid for the glass. We have a current contract with Strategic Materials. This new contract includes an increase in pricing- from $20 per ton to $30 per ton.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Becoming more resilient by mitigating, responding, and adapting to emerging threats.

Budgetary Impact: Strategic Materials pays Solid Waste & Recycling $30 per ton for glass.

Recommendation/Motion: Motion to approve a contract with Strategic Materials to process glass bottles and jars for recycling.
