Introduction & Background: In July 2001, the legislature of the State of North Carolina adopted session law 2001-214-Senate Bill 300. This bill requires that all North Carolina counties and municipalities adopt an approved Hazard Mitigation Plan in order to be eligible for public assistance money should a disaster occur. This plan must be updated every 5 years to remain eligible for public assistance.Chatham County originally had their own plan. We have elected to do a regional plan with our surrounding county partners for this upcoming approval period. The plan we developed regionally was FEMA approved January 2016.
Discussion and Analysis: Chatham County, Moore County, Lee County, Harnett County, and Johnston County coordinated the development of a regional hazard mitigation plan team.We began meeting and working on this plan in March 2015 cross referencing our current mitigation plans along with regional data. The first draft of the update went to Raleigh and FEMA in December 2015 and was approved January 2016.This mitigation plan gives the county and towns a good opportunity to review their hazards and things that can be done to lessen the impact of natural disasters. This plan also allows us to augment our capabilites through county and other jurisdictional areas due to looking at the region as a whole and everyones capabilities and resources. It also allows all participating jurisdictions to be eligible for the Public Assistance Disaster Relief Fund in the future. The approval letter from FEMA was received January, 2016 pending the adoption by each county board.
