Title

Vote on a request to approve a letter of commitment for the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

Abstract

Action Requested: Vote on a request to approve a letter of support is needed to be included with the membership application being submitted to AARP for Chatham County to become a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

Introduction & Background:

In Chatham County, the influx of seniors is outpacing North Carolina’s own growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s own population estimates, North Carolina experienced a 17% increase in the 65-and-over population from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2019. Within that same time frame, Chatham saw its 65-and-over population increase by 25% - more than doubling neighboring Wake County at 12%.

As AARP observes, one in five North Carolinians will soon be over the age of 65. According to the North Caroline Office of State Budget and Management, in 2020 Chatham County had roughly double the number of residents aged 60 and over (26,503) compared to children through the age of 17 (13,596).

Discussion & Analysis:

AARP has created the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities to help local communities become more livable and age-friendly for all. Chatham County Council on Aging/Chatham County Aging Services wishes to apply for membership into this network so that we can ensure our community is an “Age-Friendly”, desirable and welcoming place for individuals of all ages to live and work. Along with a membership application, a letter of commitment is needed from the Board of Commissioners.
