Vote to adopt a resolution recognizing Overdose Awareness Day in Chatham County

Abstract

Introduction & Background: August 31, 2026, is recognized as Overdose Awareness Day in Chatham County. This observance provides an opportunity to honor individuals who have lost their lives to drug overdose, support those impacted by substance use disorder, and recognize the efforts of individuals and organizations working to prevent overdose and promote recovery.

Discussion & Analysis: Drug overdose continues to affect individuals, families, and communities across Chatham County and the nation. Substance use disorder is a treatable health condition; however, stigma and misunderstanding often create barriers to treatment and recovery. Overdose Awareness Day raises public awareness about the impact of overdose deaths, encourages compassionate support for those affected by addiction, promotes evidence-based prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction strategies, and offers hope to individuals and families navigating substance use challenges.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This resolution supports the Comprehensive Plan’s goals of promoting community health, well-being, and access to supportive services. It aligns with efforts to foster a healthy, resilient community by encouraging awareness, education, prevention, recovery support, and collaboration among public, private, and community partners.

Budgetary Impact: There is no financial impact associated with adoption of this resolution.

Recommendation/Motion: Motion to adopt a resolution recognizing Overdose Awareness Day in Chatham County.
