Title
Vote to approve and present a Resolution Recognizing Juneteenth as an Official Holiday and Honoring its Historical Significance
Abstract
Introduction & Background: Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history, the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This historic moment came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and symbolizes both the delay in justice and the enduring spirit of freedom.
For over 150 years, Juneteenth has been celebrated across the United States as a powerful symbol of Black freedom, community, and resilience. In 2021, Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday, and since then, numerous state and local governments have followed suit.
Discussion & Analysis: In line with this national recognition and in support of Chatham County’s values of diversity, inclusion, and historical acknowledgment, the County will begin formally observing Juneteenth as a paid holiday for all employees in 2025.
