Vote to adopt and present a Resolution to proclaim May 11, 2025, through June 15, 2025 as Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month in Chatham County
Abstract
Introduction & Background: The Chatham County Board of Commissioners has regularly passed a proclamation proclaiming Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month, coinciding with the statewide recognition that runs from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day every year.
Discussion & Analysis: Staff and community partners from many agencies and organizations, including the Chatham County Department of Social Services, Chatham County Aging Services, and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department work together to promote awareness of elder abuse in its various forms.
Those in attendance on April 21, 2025, are encouraged to wear purple.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This relates directly to the Comprehensive Plan goal to “Foster a Healthy Community.” Chatham County has an older population than its surrounding neighbors, with 26.4% of residents being age 65 or over (US Census Data.) Promoting education and awareness of elder abuse and exploitation is in keeping with Health Action Item 7 which aims to promote the safety of aging adults in the county, particularly with regards to fraud and independent living.
Budgetary Impact: None
Recommendation/Motion: Motion to adopt and present a Resolution proclaiming May 11, 2025, through June 15, 2025 as Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month.
