Vote to accept $7,500 from the NC Alliance for Public Health Agencies to participate in the Thriving Hearts research project in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill and Orange County Health Department

Abstract

Introduction & Background: The overarching goal of Thriving Hearts is to implement a multi-level intervention through local health departments (LHDs) to create the conditions for mothers and birthing people to not only survive pregnancy, but to thrive. The joint study between the UNC School of Medicine and the Orange County Health Department has been awarded a $21 million funding award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to make pregnancy and birth safer for North Carolinians with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Ten local health departments are participating in the initiative: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Johnston, Orange, and Person. Thriving Hearts will work with prenatal clinics to help people who are at high risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy by providing home blood pressure monitors and low-dose aspirin, offer workshops on healing-centered, trauma-informed care for staff, and provide community health workers who will connect pregnant people with community resources.

Discussion & Analysis: This funding supports pre-implementation (planning) activities related to the Thriving Hearts initiative. Chatham County Public Health Department will receive additional funding over the next 5 fiscal years to support implementation.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Plan Goal #10: Foster a healthy community.
