Title

Discuss a request by the Chatham Planning Board to provide recommendations to amend the Ordinance Establishing the Chatham County Planning Board

Abstract

Introduction & Background: The Chatham County Planning Board was established by ordinance by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. The Planning Board has adopted a set of Rules of Procedure and a Code of Ethics. The board uses these documents to provide efficient and effective service to the residents of Chatham County and the Board of Commissioners. The Planning board plays a crucial role in guiding land use, development, and zoning policies in Chatham County.

Discussion & Analysis: During recent Planning Board meetings, members have expressed interest in reviewing the Ordinance Establishing the Planning Board and providing recommended changes to the Commissioners. The ordinance provides that Planning Board member terms run concurrent with the appointing commissioner. This means that commissioners who take office in December are expected to either reappoint or appoint Planning Board members that same month. This has created a situation where commissioners many times have to wait until the beginning of the following year to appoint Planning Board members, which leaves a level of uncertainty about the status of members for several months. The Planning Board is requesting that the commissioners authorize them to review the ordinance and provide recommended amendments.
