Title
Receive a presentation and vote to approve the agenda and format for an upcoming Board of Commissioners climate retreat
Abstract
Introduction & Background: At the Board of Commissioners’ (BOC) April work session, The BOC approved for staff to begin planning a climate retreat for the BOC. This retreat was based on a recommendation from the Climate Change Advisory Committee (CCAC). The purpose of the retreat was to present data on the current and possible future impacts of climate change on Chatham County and to begin developing next steps for an action plan to address these impacts.
Discussion & Analysis: The agenda and scope for this climate retreat are based on the recommendation made by the Climate Change Advisory Committee and approved by the BOC. Central Pines Regional Council is a Council of Governments organization that provides support to local governments in a variety of areas. They are currently assisting the Town of Pittsboro with development of a climate action plan. Staff asked Central Pines for a proposal to facilitate a climate retreat, including arranging for experts to present to the BOC on both local climate effects and planning for climate action. Central Pines will also be assisting the BOC to develop next steps in the climate planning process by guiding the discussion. The one-day event should give opportunity for the BOC to receive information, ask questions, and discuss alternatives for moving forward.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Plan Chatham has entire sections dedicated to Resiliency and Natural Resources, both of which are impacted by changes in the climate.
Budgetary Impact: The cost estimate for the retreat is approximately $5,000.
Recommendation/Motion: Receive a presentation and motion to approve the agenda and format for an upcoming Board of Commissioners climate retreat.
