Abstract
Introduction & Background: North Carolina Juvenile Justice is a division of the Department of Public Safety that manages legal cases for youth ages 6-17 who commit delinquent (criminal) or undisciplined (status) offenses. It focuses on rehabilitation over punishment, providing court-involved, probation, and detention services to improve public safety and support youth development.
Discussion & Analysis: Counties across the state have been asked to approve resolutions to support the legislative requests made by NCDPS Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for increased funding for Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils, Community Programs, Juvenile Crisis and Assessment Center, Short-Term Residential Contract Sites, Transitional Living Programs, Medical/Mental Health Crisis Unit Capacity Increase, and NC Secure All Firearms Effectively Campaign. According to latest news reports, the NC General Assembly is unlikely to reach negotiations to pass any bills on the floor until they go back into session in 2026. One of those bills in consideration is the financial requests made by NCDPS Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to increase funding for programming to include JCPCs.
