Title
Vote to adopt a resolution recognizing May 10, 2026, through June 21, 2026 as Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month in Chatham County
Abstract
Introduction & Background: The Chatham County Board of Commissioners has joined with the NC Department of Health and Human Services in proclaiming Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month, from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day every year.
Discussion & Analysis: Elder abuse is a community wide issue and many organizations, including the Chatham County Department of Social Services, Chatham County Aging Services, and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office work together to promote awareness and address elder abuse in its various forms.
Those in attendance on May 4, 2026, are encouraged to wear purple, and time permitting, take a photo with commissioners and the proclamation.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This relates directly to the Comprehensive Plan goal to “Foster a Healthy Community.” Chatham County has a growing aging population, with a 65% increase in the number of 65+ year olds by 2042 (NCDHHS). Promoting education and awareness of elder abuse and exploitation is in keeping with Health Action Item 7 which aims to promote the safety of aging adults in the county, particularly with regards to fraud and independent living.
Budgetary Impact: None
Recommendation/Motion: Motion to adopt a resolution recognizing May 10, 2026, through June 21, 2026 as Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month in Chatham County.
