Vote to approve and present a Resolution Proclaiming May 25-31, 2025 as Chatham County Heat Awareness Week

Abstract

Introduction & Background: In 2024, Chatham County adopted its first Heat Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy designed to protect residents from extreme heat events. Developed collaboratively by local agencies and community partners, the plan focuses on public education, preparedness, and response measures to mitigate heat-related health risks.

This resolution is an acknowledgment that extreme heat is known to significantly impact health through heat-related illness or death and worsening of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cerebrovascular disease.

Discussion & Analysis: The State of NC has recognized heat as an important threat to the health and well-being of our residents and has collaborated with scientists, health experts, and community leaders to develop heat resilience resources. Chatham joins other communities in proclaiming May 25-31 as Heat Awareness Week.
