Title
Vote to approve a contract with Samsara, Inc., to provide fleet telematics for the Environmental Quality Department fleet
Abstract
Introduction & Background: Telematics is a technology to track a vehicle’s location, speed, and other operating characteristics in real time. In addition, the Samsara telematics system has a camera mounted on the vehicle’s dashboard. The information gained from installing the system will help with vehicle fuel efficiency, keep up with routine maintenance, and provide valuable information in the event of an accident.
The contract is presented for Board approval because it is for more than a three-year term. The longer term comes with a more competitive price that is locked in for the full term.
Discussion & Analysis: The contract is only for the 10 vehicles in the Environmental Quality Department fleet. This includes 5 large diesel roll-off trucks used for Solid Waste hauling that log tens of thousands of miles per year. Information gathered from the use of telematics on this smaller fleet can serve as a pilot for the potential installation of telematics across the whole County fleet.
How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: This contract helps with the objective of Becoming more resilient by mitigating, responding, and adapting to emerging threats.
Budgetary Impact: The total cost is $33,664.64 over five years. The amount for this fiscal year is available in the current budget.
Recommendation/Motion: Motion to approve the contract with Samsara, Inc., to provide fleet telematics for the Environmental Quality Department fleet.
