Abstract
Action Requested: Consideration of a request to accept $2,700 Awarded to the Health Department from the Center for Public Health Quality.
Introduction & Background: The Center of Public Health Quality (CPHQ) is a nonprofit agency within the NC Public Health Foundation (NC PHF) and staffed by both the Foundation and the NC Division of Public Health (NC DPH). CPHQ collaborates with state and local partners to provide training in quality improvement (QI) methods and tools and develops, leads, and supports strategic QI initiatives for DPH and local public health agencies in North Carolina and nationally. The PH QI 101 Program is a 9-month "hands on" training which teaches local health departments to identify processes that need improvement and how to use proven QI methods and tools to implement change for improvement. As part of the PH QI 101 Program, CPHQ also awards the health department grant funds to help cover costs associated with the selected QI project. These grant funds will be used to pay for any necessary small equipment purchases, supplies, travel expenses for face-to-face workshops and to feed the participants of the onsite 4-day Kaizen Event.
Discussion & Analysis: The Chatham County Public Health Department (CCPHD) chose to create an inventory system with protocols to tract the supplies and timely reorder of appropriate quantity and variety of supplies at the Siler City Clinic. We will examine the process in which supplies are currently ordered, received, separated from medical supplies store, used, and reordered. Clinical, administrative, and laboratory staff state inefficiencies in the current inventory system have resulted in overstocking supplies and inconsistent distribution of supplies, resulting in loss of stock due to expiration.
