Title

Receive a presentation on land application of biosolids and spray irrigation

Abstract

Introduction & Background: Land application of biosolids and spray irrigation are State-permitted practices involving the application of treated wastewater materials to land. Biosolids application involves treated residual solids generated through the wastewater treatment process, while spray irrigation involves the application of treated wastewater effluent through an irrigation system.

In response to Commissioner requests and resident concerns, staff will provide an informational overview of these practices, the applicable federal and State regulatory frameworks, and the extent of Chatham County’s authority. The presentation will also discuss PFAS in wastewater and biosolids and potential long-term land and public health considerations.

Discussion & Analysis:

Receive an overview of biosolids land application, spray irrigation, PFAS considerations, applicable regulatory frameworks, and the County’s authority.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan:

The presentation addresses potential impacts to soil, groundwater, surface water, and public health associated with biosolids land application and spray irrigation. It also relates to Goal 2: Preserve, protect, and enable agriculture and forestry, as biosolids may be applied to agricultural land for soil conditioning and crop fertilization.

Budgetary Impact:

None at this time.

Recommendation/Motion:

Receive the presentation and provide direction on next steps related to land application of biosolids and spray irrigation, as necessary.
