Abstract
Introduction & Background: The revised Planning Board Ordinance for Chatham County introduces several key updates aimed at improving efficiency and aligning with the new Advisory Committee Policy. The changes recommended by members of the planning board were scheduled for a legislative public hearing with the Board of Commissioners before the Advisory Policy changes were adopted. The hearing was continued to allow the Planning Board to make the necessary changes related to the new policy.
The planning board discussed the final draft of changes at their September 2nd meeting. The board voted unanimously to recommend approval of the ordinance as amended.
Discussion & Analysis: The revised ordinance introduces several procedural and structural updates to the Planning Board's operations. A key change is the new terms of members will start on March 1st and end on February 28th/29th of the fourth calendar year. The planning board is exempt from the three-year term limit proposed in the Advisory Committee Policy. The language clarifying incumbent members can serve until their replacement is appointed is not affected by the new policy. Section 1 C, relating to removing a member, was updated to align with the new policy and the language was streamlined.
