Vote to adopt a resolution proclaiming August as National Breastfeeding Month and August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week in Chatham County

Abstract

Introduction & Background: In 2021, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Chatham County to be a “Breastfeeding Friendly community”.

This proclamation is an acknowledgment that families are a priority in Chatham County, and that part of helping families thrive is ensuring that they receive community support to develop and sustain healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, this helps to ensure that a parent’s decision to breastfeed or provide human milk is supported by their family, workplace, and the community.

Discussion & Analysis: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dietetic Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Academy of Family Physicians, World Health Organization, and other leading health organizations, human milk is the optimal food for infants. This proclamation coincides with national and international celebrations.

How does this relate to the Comprehensive Plan: Plan Goal #10: Foster a healthy community.

Budgetary Impact: N/A
